Where Does Your Junk Go After We Haul It Away?

Most of what leaves your house during a junk hauling in Raleigh, NC, never gets buried. The sorted load is divided among four other outlets: furniture is donated, appliances and metal are collected by the scrap yard (after the removal of the refrigerant), TVs and computers end up at an electronics recycler, and the “surplus trash” is hauled to the South Wake Landfill in Apex.

Three Brothers Hauling & Logistics sorts every load as it comes out of the garage, attic or spare room, and our junk hauling crews drop each pile where Wake County and state rules say it belongs. A couch with a torn arm and a couch in good shape can sit on the same truck and be at the ends of the same day.

How Junk Is Sorted for Recycling and Disposal

Every load gets sorted by condition and material. Anything clean and usable goes to donation, and the rest is separated for recycling and disposal based on its material and local rules.

If you have ever wondered where does junk go after removal, the answer is one of four piles:

  • Donation: furniture, working appliances, tools and housewares in sellable shape
  • Other products including scrap and recycling items such as metal bed frames, grills, bikes, washers, dryers and cardboard.
  • Restricted items: TVs, computers, refrigerant appliances, tires and batteries.
  • Landfill: stained mattresses, broken particle board and mixed debris

Sorting must be done prior to compaction: no one fishes a good dresser out of a crushed load. That’s why what happens to junk after removal depends mostly on the hauler you pick. A crew that skips the sort can tip the whole truck at the landfill in one stop, which is faster for them and worse for everything on board that still worked.

What Happens to Furniture After Junk Removal

Furniture is in good condition and can be sold or donated. The rest is either disassembled or disposed of. According to EPA data, the U.S. discarded 12.1 million tons of furniture and furnishings in 2018. About 80.1% of that waste, or 9.7 million tons, ended up in landfills.

Donation is where a local crew changes that math. Habitat ReStores around the Triangle resell furniture and appliances to fund affordable housing, though upholstered pieces have to be free of tears, stains and pet damage. One of our Google reviews mentions a large furniture donation we coordinated with Habitat, and we’re a Resupply Champion Partner with more than 2,500 donations driven.

Donating rarely changes your price, since load size sets most of it. Our guide to what hauling services cost in Raleigh shows how a quarter load compares with a full one.

If the piece cannot be resold, then furniture recycling is primarily breakdown. While steel frames and springs are sent to the scrap stream, clean unpainted wood is typically chipped and foam and fabric typically remain in the trash stream. That’s what happens to furniture after junk removal when a sofa is past saving, and it’s fair to ask any local hauler to name the charity its donation pieces go to.

Appliance Recycling and Refrigerant Rules

Refrigerators, freezers, window AC units and dehumidifiers have their refrigerant recovered first, and then the metal recycled. According to the EPA’s appliance disposal rules, the final person or business disposing of the appliance is responsible for recovering any remaining refrigerant.

If someone earlier in the chain pulls the refrigerant, EPA requires a signed statement with that person’s name, address and the recovery date. Mercury switches, PCBs and compressor oil also have to come out under 40 CFR Parts 273, 279 and 761. That’s what happens to appliances after junk removal on a job done by the book, while washers, dryers and stoves skip the refrigerant step and go nearly straight to the scrap yard.

Appliance recycling works at scale. In 2018, EPA estimated that 3.1 million tons of steel and iron was recovered from shredded units, which is nearly 60 percent by weight, and 5.3 million tons of major appliances were discarded. White goods are not allowed in landfills in North Carolina, so make sure any hauler quoting your appliance removal recovers the refrigerant first.

What Happens to Electronics After Junk Removal

TVs, computers, monitors, and printers go to an electronics recycler because North Carolina has banned computer equipment and televisions from landfills since 2011. The state’s landfill disposal ban list also covers scrap tires, lead acid batteries, and used oil, and lithium ion batteries join it on December 1, 2026.

That battery rule is the one to watch this winter. Laptop batteries, cordless drills, vapes and power banks all contain lithium batteries, and a broken battery can start a fire in a garbage truck. EPA estimates that there were 2.7 million tons of consumer electronics discarded nationwide in 2018 and 38.5 percent of those were recycled.

Once the ban took effect, what happens to electronics after junk: Recyclers extract the batteries, and then strip out the circuit boards, copper, plastic and glass. Every hauler in the state is subject to the ban, so if a crew drops off your old TV with the mattresses, find out where that load is going.

Tip: Wipe your devices before pickup. Factory reset phones and laptops, sign out of cloud accounts and pull the hard drive from any desktop you’re done with. Good recyclers destroy drives, but your own reset is the step you control.

Junk Drop-Off Points in Raleigh and Wake County

Each kind of junk has its own location in Wake County, and the landfill comes last. So here is the local version.

Two county facilities handle most of what a Raleigh cleanout produces: North Wake at 9029 Deponie Drive and South Wake at 6130 Old Smithfield Road in Apex, both open Monday through Saturday. For a junk hauling job inside the Beltline, that can mean a stop on Deponie Drive for the TV and fridge before the truck heads south.

Which Items Still End Up in Landfills?

Stained mattresses, broken particleboard, torn furniture, and mixed household trash still go to the landfill. In Wake County, that is the South Wake Landfill, the county’s primary disposal site.

Junk disposal there is priced by weight. Haulers pay $37 per ton for regular trash, which includes North Carolina’s $2 per ton excise tax, plus $15 for every mattress or box spring. That’s why many quotes list mattresses separately: one mattress costs about as much at the scale as 800 pounds of ordinary trash.

The weight fee itself is small. Say a half load of mixed junk weighs 600 pounds; the landfill charges about $11 for it, and the truck, fuel, and crew make up most of your bill. A Raleigh junk hauling quote far below everyone else’s sometimes means the load never sees a scale, so ask for the drop point by name.

How Eco Haulers Reduce Landfill Use

Eco-friendly junk haulers reduce landfill waste by sorting items before loading them, donating usable goods, recycling scrap materials, and keeping items that cannot go in regular trash separate. Eco friendly junk hauling takes more drive time per job, and in exchange, more of each load goes back into use.

So how do eco haulers reduce landfill use when a pile is half junk and half decent stuff? Clean parts are removed from the driveway, metal goes in the metal compartment of the truck and batteries are taken out of drawers before any items reach a compactor.

Any company that is a junk removal recycling company should be able to identify its downstream partners. An honest crew will tell you that, even when the junk recycling company is careful, there will be some waste in every load of junk.

Sustainable junk removal depends on you too: a couch kept in a dry garage can usually be donated, while the same couch left under a leaky carport through a humid Raleigh summer usually can’t.

Tip: Keep parts together. Bag the bed frame bolts, tape shelf pegs inside the bookcase and leave the leaf with the table. Complete pieces get donated, and incomplete ones usually drop to scrap.

How Much Does Responsible Junk Disposal Cost?

Junk disposal in Raleigh normally costs $75 to $150 for a single item and $400 to $650 for a full load, priced by how much truck space your items fill. Heavy material like concrete or shingles is the exception, since it is priced by the ton.

JobEstimated 2026 priceWhere most of it goes
Single furniture item (sofa, recliner, mattress)$75 to $150Donation if clean, landfill if worn
Quarter to half load (garage corner, small cleanout)$200 to $375Donation, scrap metal and landfill
Three-quarter to full load (full garage, storage unit)$400 to $650Split across all four piles
Appliance with refrigerant recovery$100 to $225Refrigerant recovery, then scrap
Construction or renovation debris$85 to $150 per tonDebris landfill or recycler

These are approximate estimates. Every job gets a photo estimate or walk-through before the price is agreed on.

City Bulky Pickup vs. a Private Junk Hauler

You may not need a junk hauler for one or two couches if you can wait for city pickup and move the furniture to the curb yourself. Under Raleigh’s bulk trash pickup rules, the city charges $35 for a Bulky Load, which holds about two couches or three queen mattresses, and $70 for a Special Load of appliances or exercise equipment.

Electronics cost even less, since city residents get free curbside pickup for up to four electronic items a week. Paid help earns its fee when items sit upstairs, when the city won’t take them (renovation debris and tires are on its never list), or when the pile outgrows a couple of city loads.

The city’s $35 pickup works for a single sofa. For heavy, mixed or rushed loads, a private junk removal service is the better call. If you need a garage cleared in Cary, Garner or Morrisville, call 919-559-2801 for same-day or next-day pickup.

Frequently Asked Questions

What will junk removal not take?

Most crews won’t take hazardous materials. We turn down wet paint, chemicals, asbestos, ammunition and full propane tanks; Wake County’s hazardous waste sites take most of those from residents, and asbestos needs a licensed abatement contractor.

Where does all the waste go after we throw it away?

About half of it goes to landfills. EPA’s most recent national figures, for 2018, count 292.4 million tons of trash: roughly 146 million tons landfilled, 69 million recycled, 25 million composted and nearly 35 million burned for energy.

Do junk removal companies throw everything away?

Not if they sort. A crew that sorts its loads donates usable furniture, recycles metal and electronics, and sends only what is left to the landfill. We sort every load before the truck leaves your driveway.

Are you supposed to tip junk haulers?

Tipping isn’t expected. Many homeowners hand $10 to $20 per person after a heavy or messy job, and cold water on a hot afternoon always goes over well.

Do you haul junk outside Raleigh?

Yes. We cover North Hills, Five Points, Cameron Park and Brier Creek, plus Durham, Cary, Apex, Garner and Morrisville. Durham loads take a different disposal route, since the South Wake Landfill only accepts waste from inside Wake County.

How fast can you pick up junk in Raleigh?

Same-day pickup is often possible if you call early, and next-day is the usual fallback. If you are moving out, book a few days ahead so you get the time window you want.

Can a business use Raleigh’s bulky pickup?

No. The city’s Bulky, Special and electronics collections are open only to residents with curbside garbage service. Offices, retail spaces and job sites need a private hauler, and we schedule commercial pickups around business hours.

Where does yard waste go in Raleigh?

Yard waste is composted since North Carolina prohibits yard waste from the normal landfill. The City of Raleigh operates its own Yard Waste Center, and storm branches are not part of a trash load, but part of a yard waste processor.

The Short Answer: Most of Your Junk Stays Out of the Landfill

If you’ve wondered where does junk go after removal, a sorted load mostly stays out of the ground. Clean furniture heads to Habitat ReStores, fridges lose their refrigerant before the scrap yard, TVs go to an electronics recycler, and only stained mattresses and broken particleboard reach the South Wake Landfill in Apex.

Ask any junk hauling Raleigh, NC crew to name its drop points. If it can’t, the sort probably got skipped. With lithium-ion batteries joining North Carolina’s landfill ban on December 1, 2026, that question gets harder to dodge.
